Psychotherapy - How I work
I have worked with individual clients for over 24 years. My aim is to provide a space where deeply personal and sensitive issues can be safely discussed and creatively explored.
I work with current as well as long-standing life challenges, personality and relationship issues, questions around life path and purpose and major life transitions. I draw from a wide range of psychotherapeutic perspectives and modalities. My main orientation is psychodynamic and transpersonal. I respect people’s religious and spiritual orientations and see them primarily as an asset from which to draw strength.
How can psychotherapy/counseling help me?
Most people seek psychotherapy or counseling when confronted by some major life change, crisis or uncertainty. This may include people whose happiness gets repeatedly jeopardized by traumatic experiences that occurred in early life. Here deeper long term psychotherapy may be indicated. It can help people manage and to various degrees help heal past wounds and their effects on their current lives, while uncovering new inner strengths and resources. Breakdown can lead to break through, to new possibilities, renewed purpose and hope. This often leaves people with deepened self-understanding and new life supporting strategies.
Psychotherapy training
The transpersonal aspect of my work has been greatly influenced through my training at the London Center for Transpersonal Psychology with Barbara Somers and the late Ian GordonBrown, where I obtained an Advanced Diploma in Transpersonal Psychotherapy in 1992 and became a UKCP registered Psychotherapist.
In the eighties I studied with experts in the filed of body oriented, process-oriented and Gestalt therapy such as David Boadella, Terry & Jenna Cooper from ‘Spectrum, Amy and Arnie Mindell and Marty Fromm.
In the nineties I trained with Elisabeth MacCormick in Cognitive Analytical and Behavioural methods (CBT & CAT).
In 2002 I completed one year introductory course in group analysis with the London Institute for Group Analysis at the Warneford hospital in Oxford.
The analytical orientation of my work has been greatly informed by 12 years of Kleinian supervision and mentoring with the late Dr. Isabel Menzies-Lyth who studied with Bion and Melanie Klein and was a pioneering figure among the founding group of the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations.
In 2009 I completed a course in Executive Management Coaching with John Bowell & David Brown at Sir John’s Whitmore’s school of Performance Consultancy.
Psychodynamic Psychotherapy
This is a form of depth psychology, the primary focus of which is to reveal the unconscious content of a client's psyche in an effort to alleviate psychic tension. Although it has its roots in psychoanalysis, the psychodynamic approach tends to be briefer and less intensive than traditional psychoanalysis. In both however, the therapeutic relationship is regarded as a central vehicle that brings to light unconscious complexities and issues concerning self and others.
Transpersonal Psychotherapy
Transpersonal means beyond or through the persona. It is a perspective that sees people through and beyond the limitation of the everyday ‘I’ or personality identification, by acknowledging the notion of an essential self which lies at the heart of our humanity.
The idea is that within this essential self is contained the elixir of life, i.e. the vitality, the wisdom and knowledge required to realize our full human potential. Thus it refers to a deeper, spiritual dimension of the human soul in addition to our everyday ego-centered personalities. As a holistic form of therapy, it integrates the rational with the non-rational, masculine and feminine energies, the conscious with the unconscious, the ego with the soul. It marries Western and Eastern philosophies and spiritual traditions with modern western psychology.

The first session
The first session is an assessment session for both client and therapist with no strings attached. Here both parties can get a feeling for each other, while the client’s reasons for seeking therapy gets explored. If both sides agree that working together would be fruitful, time commitment and frequency of sessions will be discussed. After the first six weeks there may be a revision before open-ended work continues.
