The Five Elements &
The Art of Self-cultivation
with Gaby Hock in Oxford

Introduction/Taster Day 28th June 2008

Running into its third year, this course is based on the philosophy and psychology of the Chinese Five Elements and Taoism. It’s emphasis is on the understanding of the seven emotions as expressions of the five seasons and their climatic conditions, the subtle power of the five Shen (spirits)  and the five virtues.  The theory is mainly based on the Huang Di Nei Ching (The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine) and in parts on the Tao Te Ching and the I Ching.  The evocative imagery and poetry of the classics is brought to life through reflective exercises, guided imagery, Qi Gong, meditation and discussion.

Gaby draws on 20 years experience as a Five Element lecturer and workshop leader and from her practices as a traditional acupuncturist and transpersonal psychotherapist.  Her speciality is to bring to life core aspects from classical Chinese texts through a range of innovative exercises for the purpose of personal insight and healing.

One participant's comment about previous course: Gaby, thank you! This course far exceeded my hopes, not just in terms of what I learned cognitively, but in the learning that was opened up in the experiential work we did. You created a wonderful safe, 'held' space, in which our group could gel and blossom. It felt intimate and trusting, and was rich with teaching on many levels. I didn't just learn more about the Five Elements, but also about my own process. It was a heartfelt, nurturing healing experience. L.H.  May 2007
